SUNNY ISLES BEACH, FL. (October 21, 2013)- South Florida philanthropists are invited to an evening in celebration of making dreams come true as Stephanie, Jules and Eddie Trump of Acqualina Resort & Spa on the Beach host the 18th Annual I Have a Dream Foundation Miami Gala on Thursday, November 14th at the Westin Diplomat Resort & Spa. Along with honorary co-chairs Tom and Leslie Murphy and Sean and Jennifer Murphy, the I Have a Dream Foundation Miami invites South Florida to continue to support the cause of the Dreamers as they continue to invest in the future of the community, turning despair into dreams and obstacles into opportunities.

Following a cocktail reception and silent auction, guests will enjoy dinner, music and a live auction. Consistently one of South Florida’s most highly anticipated annual events, funds raised at the gala benefit the I Have a Dream Foundation Miami’s Dreamers. In 2012, the I Have a Dream Gala raised more than $500,000 for children’s programming in South Florida.

Individual and corporate sponsorships are available starting at $1,000 (for two tickets). Attire: Black Tie Optional.

The “I Have a Dream” Foundation empowers children in low-income communities to achieve higher education and fulfill their leadership potential by providing them with the skills, knowledge, and habits they need to gain entry to higher education and succeed in college and beyond. We guarantee their academic tuition at a Florida state university for a 4-year degree or at an accredited trade school. This allows them to become proud and productive citizens. The program adopts an entire kindergarten class of Dreamers in an economically disadvantaged school. Once chosen, the foundation provides tutoring, mentoring, pregnancy and drug prevention programs, college preparatory classes and counseling to the Dreamers.

The program was launched in 1981, when founder Eugene Lang returned to his alma mater, PS. 121 in East Harlem, to address the graduating sixth grade class. When he learned that three-quarters of the school’s students would probably drop out of school, Lang promised college tuition to every sixth grader who graduated from high school. The results were truly amazing, 90% of those sixth graders graduated from high school, and 60% went to college. This remarkable accomplishment led to the creation of the “I Have a Dream” Foundation, which consists of 35 affiliates across the United Sates, and two in New Zealand. Within those 35 affiliates, there are 65 current cohorts serving more than 4,000 Dreamers in 30 U.S. cities.
