THE “I HAVE A DREAM” FOUNDATION OF MIAMI CELEBRATES 17 YEARS OF MAKING DREAMS A REALITY WITH ANNUAL GALA HOSTED BY THE TRUMP FAMILY

.

WHAT: Local Miami philanthropists will join together on Wednesday, November 14, 2012 for the 17th annual “I Have a Dream” Foundation of Miami Gala 2012 at Fontainebleau Miami Beach hosted by Stephanie, Jules, and Eddie Trump of Acqualina Resort & Spa on the Beach. The Foundation invites guests who have supported the cause to meet the Dreamers as they continue to invest in the future of the community, turning despair into dreams and converting obstacles into opportunities. Guests will enjoy a cocktail reception and silent auction followed by dinner and live auction with evening entertainment provided by acclaimed jazz artist, Nicole Henry. All funds raised during the memorable evening will be used to support I Have a Dream Foundation of Miami’s work in the local community for the class of 2020. In 2011, the annual “I Have a Dream” Celebration raised $500,000 for children’s programming in Miami.

The Miami chapter of “I Have a Dream” Foundation was founded in 1995 by the Trump Family. The foundation adopted the entire second grade class (97 Dreamers) at the Charles R. Drew School in Liberty City. These Dreamers were provided with year-round (after school and summer) programs of academic enhancement, as well as cultural, social, and recreational activities, throughout their entire educational years. This continuous motivation and support gave them the stability and proper tools they needed and deserved to reach their academic success. The chapter’s class of 2005 far exceeded
expectations with 95 out of 97 Dreamers reaching 12th grade and 83 of these Dreamers graduating. 72 of these Dreamers are now in college, or have already graduated. In August of 2007, the Miami chapter started a new class of Dreamers at Hibiscus Elementary School - the class of 2020.

WHY:  About the “I Have a Dream” Foundation:
The “I Have a Dream” Foundation empowers children in low-income communities to achieve higher education and fulfill their leadership potential by providing them with the skills, knowledge, and habits they need to gain entry to higher education and succeed in college and beyond. We guarantee their academic tuition at a Florida state university for a 4 year degree or at an accredited trade school. This allows them to become proud and productive citizens. The program adopts an entire kindergarten class of Dreamers at a     low-performing school in an economically disadvantaged area. Once chosen, the foundation provides tutoring, mentoring, pregnancy and drug prevention programs, college preparatory classes and counseling to the Dreamers.

The program was launched in 1981, when founder Eugene Lang returned to his alma mater, PS. 121 in East Harlem, to address the graduating sixth grade class. When he learned that three-quarters of the school’s students would probably drop out of school, Lang promised college tuition to every sixth grader who graduated from high school. The results were truly amazing, 90% of those sixth graders graduated from high school, and 60% went to college. This remarkable accomplishment led to the creation of the “I Have a        Dream” Foundation, which consists of 35 affiliates across the United Sates, and one in New Zealand. Within those 35 affiliates, there are 65 current cohorts serving more than 4,000 Dreamers in 30 U.S. cities.
